To Pierce or not to Pierce

So my baby is 8 months old now. Time is really flying by! I have been contemplating getting her ears pierced and have yet to take the leap! I am wondering if I have waited to long to do it, since she is at the age where she may be pulling at her ears. How old were your children when they got pierced? What was your experience like?

  1. Aww...I think little girls look so cute with earrings :) I didn't have my girls' ears pierced as babies (my mother talked me out of it!), but they had them done when they were around 7yo.

I'm visiting from Mom Bloggers Club and I'm your newest follower! I'd love for you to come visit me!

    Have a wonderful day!

  3. My mother had my ears pierced when I was 5 - it involved a lot of screaming and a cone of mint chocolate chip ice cream. My sister she had done at a few months old - no fuss. My sister and I talked a lot about it over the years. She wishes she'd at least had a say in it and I am glad I did. When I had a daughter my mom wanted me to get her done as an infant and I refused. I wanted a permanent alterationto her body to be her choice. I also wanted it to be a mom and daughter bonding moment. However when she was three and I was stuck in the hospital with my son my mom took her and had her ears pierced behind my back (I think she thought it would never happen if she didn't do it herself). It's a tough decision. I don't regret holding off on my daughter because she feels like she had a say in it (even if I didn't) and that's what mattered to me the most.

  4. Thanks for visiting my blog - I am now following you too...I decided to wait as LONG as possible to pierce my daughter's ears...I figure that will lengthen the amount of time before she wants to pierce anything else!!

  6. My daughter just had hers done at age 4. It was her decision and she was totally ready - didn't cry when the did it or anything.

I didn't do it when she was a baby and I'm glad I waited. I think it means something that they decide when to do it when their older. There's also the practical considerations about caring for the earring, getting them to heal and everything. I'm still having trouble that one ear is healed and one ear still bleeds (my daughter's right ear). I can't figure out what is going on. I can't imagine going through that with a little baby. If they get infected and you have to take them out that's about $40 right down the drain.

  7. LOL@ Swati...good thinking
@Joey I totally know what you mean as far as the healing process goes. I hope you can stop that bleeding soon! Thanx for stopping by!

  8. Both my girls were 4 months and we had no problems. I don't think there is any right or wrong, just preference and whatever works for you. Found you on MBC.

  11. Ear piercing is not a priority to me. That's just me. I would never get a baby's ear pierced because I would feel all the pulling and infections and junk. But keep in mind, I had my daughter's ears done when she was 4..she did great!...but her ears did not react well. She is very sensitive and can only wear super expensive earrings...and sometimes that doesn't even help. So at 12, she never wears earrings.

I used to pierce ears a very long time ago....I was told that it's best to wait until after 2 because of growth of ears...seriously, that's what the lady told me. lol. I have no clue if that is true or not. Sounds kinda silly. She said that as the child grows her earrings maybe be off or crooked because of growth. AGain, sounds crazy to me but that's what she said. lol.

I have a 4 year old and 18 month old and I'm waiting until they ask. I figure when they are old enough to take care of their ears then they can have them pierced. Maybe I'm just lazy. lol.

Now, I see nothing wrong with someone getting a baby's ears pierced. I do think it looks cute. I just wouldn't do it because of allergies...but we are a VERY skin sensitive family. lol.

  15. I pierced both my daughters ears at 6 mos. They didn't really feel it, hardly shed a tear and they didn't play with it. I kept studs in their ears until I felt they were old enough to wear tiny hoops and wouldn't pull on them.

    Popping in from MBC!

  16. Our age is they have to be 13 years old. That way they can take care of them and hopefully they have stopped playing in the dirt!!

I like your blog and am a new follower through MBC! Hi!

  17. I pierced my dd's ears when she was 5 months. I got tired of them asking if she was a boy. Even wearing pink and purple some people are so clueless

We didn't have a problem. I don't even think she noticed them. She was very easy going though too.
Good luck. I bet she's gonna look too cute

  18. Was searching MBC and came across your post anguishing whether or not to have your 8 mo dd's ears pierced now. This really is a perfect age to have her ears pierced.

We did our ODD at 9 mos after asking our ped. She encouraged me to go ahead when mom could care for them, she wouldn't remember and would be cooperative so they were perfectly centered on the ear lobe.

I'd say if your're thinking about it, then your mommy intuition is telling you now is a good time and your're ready for her to look like a little princess.

She gave us some suggestions for moms having their dd's ears pierced.

She recommended Piercing Pagoda due to their experience with infant ear piercing and
professional training. We were very pleased!

If you or any moms would like our ped's tips, then write me an e-mail and I'll send them to you. They included OTC meds to minimize any discomfort and her tips made it a good experience for both of us.

  20. I had one dd done @ 6months & the other is 3 & we didn't do it but she wants it done.
So next time we are at the mall she's getting them. My oldest dd was fine with them done as a baby but I wish I would have waited because she did tug a bit.

  21. just started following your blog. I pierced my daughters ears when she was about 9 months old. I had the Dr. office do it. She was hysterical crying (to be expected) I cried too

  23. Personally, I would do it as soon as you are able. I had to wait until I was 13... definitely felt the pain, and 'everybody had theirs done 1st' was sounded quite often, lol!

  24. My daughter was 3 and she didn't even cry! I was very shocked!! I wanted her to get them done when she was very small, but my husband wanted to wait until she told us that's what she wanted done.

  26. I think we are going to wait until they ask to have them done. We have a 2 year old and a 7 month old so if we did the baby we would also have to do the 2 year old who would never sit still to have two holes punched in her ear.

  28. While it may look cute to see a baby with her ears pierced, think of the baby, please. My Mom waited until I was 8 years old to have mine done for the first time. Even that age proved to be too young. I got an infection because the back of my earring grew into my ear. I had to go to a Dr to get it removed, by cutting into my ear. I then decided that I wanted to wait until I was older to have my ears pierced. When I turned 16 my Mom took me to have them redone. This proved to be a wise choice.

So, though it may be pretty and cute to have them done when your daughter is a baby, think about your baby's well being.

  29. I'm your latest follower and noticed this post! I've found myself asking this same question, whether or not to pierce my baby's ears or not! My husband and I decided it would be best to wait until SHE is old enough to decide for herself, you never know, she may not want them pierced after all! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. We decided to leave that decision up to my daughter. They're her ears after all! And since that's the only body modification she'll ever get to make (if I have my way) I don't want to take that away from her. ;)
